No, you do not need a GP referral to see a chiropractor in New Zealand. Chiropractors are primary healthcare providers, meaning you can book an appointment directly without a referral.
However, if your injury is related to an accident, the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) may cover part of your chiropractic treatment. Chiropractors registered with ACC can lodge claims directly, and you do not need a GP referral for this process either.

‘Remarkably’ according to a New Zealand study.
The New Zealand Government published an objective study of chiropractic. Many issues were studied, including cost effectiveness, chiropractic education and training, safety issues, and patient satisfaction.
Among other things, the resulting 377 page document concluded that chiropractic would have a positive influence on the health of a country.
The commission investigated two safety issues that had been commonly raised by chiropractic critics. The first being the safety of chiropractic spinal adjustments, and the second, the notion that seeking chiropractic care delays medical treatment. After extensive inquiry, the researchers found both safety concerns to be unfounded. Because of the lack of evidence to the contrary, the commissioners determined chiropractic care to be remarkably safe.

Your treatment plan depends entirely on your individual needs, goals, and condition. How long have you been experiencing pain or discomfort? How severe is it? What level of health and mobility do you want to achieve?
Every person is different, which means every treatment plan is unique. Based on a thorough assessment of your history and examination findings, our chiropractor will create a personalised care plan tailored specifically to you.

On your first visit you will meet with Dr Mark Bruining to discuss your current health concerns.
Dr Mark will ask for a thorough health history and ask about your specific pains. There we will complete a comprehensive, neurological, postural, orthopedic, and chiropractic examination on you, to help correctly diagnose your problem. At this point, it is possible you may be referred for x-rays.
Mark will then explain your condition, how chiropractic can help, and discuss treatment options with you.
If it is determined you are a good candidate for chiropractic care, you will be adjusted on your first visit.
